Saving more money is always good news.

Key points

  • Strategic buyers can save even more money when shopping online.
  • Combining discounts with other money-saving techniques could help you keep more money in your wallet.

I said to myself that I would not participate in Prime Day, and then I did. Can you relate? I bought my first house three years ago and have been planning on buying a doorbell camera ever since. So I decided to take advantage of Prime Day pricing and eventually ordered a video doorbell.

In addition to the discounted Prime Day deal, I used a promotional credit card to save even more money at checkout. Find out how I was able to get 50% off the regular purchase price.

For many shoppers, Prime Day is a great time to close deals on products they’ve been wanting to buy for a while.

I knew I could save money on a doorbell camera, so I looked at the prices and decided to order the Ring Video Doorbell 4. Usually, this product is priced at $219.99. During Prime Day, Amazon slashed the price to $169.99 – which is a lot even in itself.

While filling out my shopping cart, I noticed that Amazon had a promotion with American Express that allowed shoppers to save 50% on qualifying purchases (for up to $60 off) using their American Express Membership Rewards points. to do their shopping.

I’m up for a bargain, so I knew I had to take advantage of the promotion.

So how did I maximize my savings? As an Amazon Prime member, I could purchase the Video Doorbell for $169.99. I also have an American Express credit card, so I activated the promotion and agreed to use points during the checkout process.

It should be noted that using American Express Membership Rewards points to purchase items on Amazon is a poor redemption choice. I can redeem my points in another way and get more value out of them, for example by transferring my points to a travel partner for a plane ticket.

However, these promotions generally allow shoppers to use as little as one point to qualify for the promotion. So I used one of my American Express Membership Rewards points and charged the rest of the purchase to an American Express credit card.

By doing this I got an extra $60 off my purchase – and it only cost me one Amex point. The $219.99 product only cost me $109.99, which means I saved 50% off the original price.

This promotion gave me an easy way to keep more money in my bank account. Maybe shopping on Prime Day wasn’t bad for my wallet after all!
